Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a set of knowledge and practices that dates back to 3,000 BCE. It is based on a holistic understanding of the world and the human body that incorporates 5 elements (Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, Fire) and yin and yang. Using a combination of acupuncture, nutrition, bodywork, and movement, TCM practitioners guide patients in balancing these elements in the mind and body.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners use needles to manipulate the flow of qi through specific meridians, or channels, that are woven throughout the body. Qi is a dynamic, animating force that fuels the proper transformation of the elements as well as all bodily functions. When qi is not flowing freely, imbalances and pain can manifest. The goal of acupuncture is to maintain the free flow of blood and qi and to maintain balance of the 5 elements. From a modern scientific standpoint, acupuncture is thought to act on opioid systems, affect brain chemistry and neural signals, and alter blood flow.

Acupuncture is most well-known for treating acute and chronic pain conditions, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Low back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Bells Palsy
  • Shingles and post-herpetic neuralgias
  • Muscle tension
  • Headache (including Migraines)
  • Bursitis
  • PMS
  • Infertility
  • Menopausal hot flashes
  • Bladder issues
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • Gastroparesis
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Addiction

Tui Na (Chinese Massage)

Tui Na is a form of bodywork based on the acupuncture meridians. Instead of needles, Tui Na practitioners use massage to activate the channels and alleviate pain.

Cupping

Cupping is a technique in which cups are used like vacuums to break up adhesions and enhance blood flow in areas of tension. It is most often performed on the back, and is excellent for relieving muscle tension and pain.
